Training Instructions
Easy To Attach To Your Bicycle!
The Running Guard attaches to your bicycle frame on the slanted bar with a rubber-lined adapter and two hose clamps. Measure the height your dog requires before you tighten The Running Guard to your bicycle frame. When you are measuring for proper height and placing The Running Guard in position, your bicycle needs to be upright and off of the kick-stand. The proper height for your dog is under the neck, allowing enough room for movement. Use The Running Guard only on the right side of bicycle. Once you reach proper height for your dog, the adapter must be very tight. It must not move around the bar. When not using the Running Guard, it can be easily removed by unscrewing the cap at the bicycle frame.
Training Your Dog To Use The Running Guard
Training your dog with The Running Guard is like any other training. Take your time. When you are working with your dog, use commands and follow up with lots of love and praise. Move ahead only when your dog is fully comfortable with each step.
Step One:
Attach The Running Guard to the right hand side of your bicycle. Allow time for your dog to become comfortable around your bicycle with The Running Guard attached.
Step Two:
Introduce The Running Guard to your dog by allowing him time to walk around and in and out of The Running Guard on a loose leash. It is helpful but not necessary to have a second person handle the bicycle while you handle your dog. When your dog is comfortable move ahead to the next step.
Step Three:
You may begin to work with commands. For example, when moving your dog into The Running Guard you would command 'Moses! Kennel.' 'Oh, Good Boy!' If your dog is comfortable inside but not hooked up to The Running Guard, begin walking your bicycle ahead. When you begin moving use the command, for example, 'Moses, Lets Go!... Good Boy!'
Never take sharp turns or stop abruptly. Practice slow left and right turns. You might help your dog with these movements by accompanying them with commands such as, 'Moses, Go Left or Go Right' followed with praise.
When you are coming to a stop give the command, 'Moses, Easy... Good Boy!' Then come to a complete stop. If your dog is comfortable at this level you are ready to move on!
Step Four:
Now that your dog is very comfortable, hook him up with the leash and training collar to the hook-up area at the front of The Running Guard. Allow a longer training collar than he would normally wear by at least 8 to 10 inches. This will allow more room for movement.
Using the "Step Three" training methods, allow your dog to get comfortable hooked up and feeling the movement of the bicycle. When your dog is comfortable with this, move to the next level of riding your bicycle. Ride slowly at first allowing your dog to work up to an even pace.
- Always remember you are riding and your dog is on foot.
- Do not overwork your dog.
- Allow ample time to build up endurance.
- Never go so fast you and your dog are out of control.
Helpful Tip:
In order to make your guard dog friendly, rub the guard with a hot dog. They will love the smell and taste which will then take the nervousness out of your dog.
Precautions:
Not recommended for puppies under five months old. Workout time on The Running Guard should be no longer than ten minutes for puppies.
Your dog should always stay within The Running Guard. Do not allow such a long leash that your dog is out behind The Running Guard. If your dog should become frightened or uncomfortable, STOP!
Working With Puppies:
For best results, begin working with your puppy by allowing him to walk around the bike standing and when bike is moving. Allowhim to move in and out of The Running Guard. After you hook up the puppy and he is using The Running Guard, allow only small amounts of time for the work-out (approx. 10 minutes), a couple of times per dayuntil the puppy is stronger. Remember... your puppy is still growing!
